As I understand it, you’re advising not to build a product entirely around frontier models because providers can change direction or interrupt access, just like they did here. I completely agree with that.
That said, even if you have the budget to build a Mac Studio-style setup and run your own open-source models, the latest frontier models keep getting so much better that it’s incredibly tempting to build products around them.
The capability gap is still large enough that every new release makes you rethink the tradeoff between control and performance.
